René Jean Richard René Jean-Richard was born on December 1, 1895 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. At the age of eleven, René started working in the watch factory after school. From 1913 to 1926, traveling by canoe or snowshoe, Richard traveled extensively in northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Richard sold his first paintings in 1943. His first exhibition at the L'Art français gallery in Montreal was a great success and his reputation began to grow. Richard's landscapes have become very popular with collectors. When Queen Elizabeth II visited Canada in 1959, she received one of Richard's paintings from the mayor of Chicoutimi. René Richard died on March 31, 1982 in Baie Sant-Paul, at the age of 86. His autobiography My Past Life was published in 1990. |
